The Final Post

Day 60 - July 28th Grand Falls to Woodstock

The time change kicked us in the butt. We had the alarm set for 4:30 but, we hit the snooze button till 5:30. Adam received a phone call in the night so we wasn’t going anywhere too early which was no worries for us. We broke camp and hit the road by 7am. After biking about 40km we came across the Trans-Canada trail that followed the North side of the Grand River. The trail wasn’t as smooth as the Quebec trails because they were used by the 4 wheelers. It was still enjoyable to be off the hot pavement even though we weren’t traveling as fast. We met up with Adam in Hartland (the home of the longest covered bridge in the world) for lunch, and continued on the path ‘til Woodstock. After grocery shopping we made our way to the Cozy Cabins and campsite where we met up with a local reporter Angela for a few pics and an interview. She mentioned that a group was doing a gig at the local pub that night and the singer also happened to be cycling across Canada while here partner drove support vehicle with all the music instruments. We watched them perform ‘til 10:30 and Jordie could hardly keep her eyes open so we called it a night.

Day 61 - July 29th Woodstock to Fredericton

We woke up pretty foggy headed from the night before and we were on the road by 7am. Biking was sluggish for the first part but we picked up the pace as the day went on. We stayed on the main 4-lane highway for the first 70km. Then we took some secondary roads that proved to be a really good shortcut. Thanks to Adam, we shaved 30km between Woodstock and St. John. We biked 100km to Tracy and called it a day. We packed up and headed to see Michelle (a friend of Jordie’s) in Fredericton. We showered up and headed out to watch Michelle’s soccer game. Her girls’ team ended up tying the guys team with quite and exciting finish. After the game, we treated her to a home cooked pork chop dinner (Dan’s specialty), and we went to a house that she was house sitting to spend the night.

Day 62 July 30th Fredericton to St. John

We crawled out of bed around 6:30, and Dan started cooking breakfast while Jordie was busy making a Ferry reservation. We drove south to Tracy and were on the bikes by 10. We peddled 40km where Adam met us for a snack. We finished the last 40km in St. John and had lunch close to the fairy terminal. There was some time before our departure so we went to check out the market square. Dan and Adam weren’t too keen on shopping so they went to the Loose Moose patio for a frosty while Jordie checked out the local venders. We boarded the Princess Acadia around 5pm and to arrived in Digby Nova Scotia around 8.

Day 63 - July 31st Digby to Kentville

We were all a bit sluggish to roll out of bed. We started riding at 9:30 and the first 20km of riding was steady climbing from sea level to the valley. We met Adam for a snack at km 40. He stopped at the grocery store and picked up some cinnamon buns which were super tasty. The terrain wasn’t much different from what we’ve experienced, rolling hills and farming. We will be following the highway 101 for all of Nova Scotia since it is the main road. The hills are much less steeper and less windy than the secondary roads. We reached Kentville at 4pm and found a campground not far from the highway. We ate tacos for dinner and reminisced about the trip. It’s hard to get our heads around the fact that we will be done our journey tomorrow in Halifax, but there is a certain feeling of accomplishment that can’t be overlooked.

Day 64 - August 1st Kentville to Halifax

After tossing and turning all night in anticipation of the arrival, we pack up our camping gear and headed on the road. The weather couldn’t have been any better. We had smiles on or faces from ear to ear the entire day. We arrived in downtown Halifax at 1pm, after peddling 100km. We stuck our feet in the ocean as we congratulated one another. We took lots of pics before sitting down for lunch at a waterfront pub. We enjoyed some lobster rolls and some beers on the patio. We checked into the Hostel and made our way to the Alexander Keith’s Brewery for a tour and some sampling of their finest Ales. We went to the room and showered up, and made our way down to the waterfront to treat ourselves to a lobster and seafood feast… And a fine feast it was. After dinner we had some celebratory drinks and checked out the night in downtown Halifax.

Seeing how this will be our final journal entry in our blog, we would like to thank everyone that followed our trip and we really enjoyed all the comments that we’ve received throughout the trip. We would also like to thank everyone that donated to the Rick Hansen Foundation as well as all of the personal contributions that went towards offsetting the costs of our trip. We couldn’t have done this journey without the support that we received from friends, family, and the RHF. In case we aren’t able to thank you personally, we would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support.

Oh and in case anyone is wondering, we aren’t biking home, we are piling in Adam’s truck and heading back to Waltham to spend some more time with Jordan’s family. We hope to see you at our arrival party Aug. 10. Just let us know if you want tickets. It’s going to be a good one…

July 20th to July 27th

July 20, 2007 - Waltham to Luskville

After having a few days off and getting got up on sleep and fed some delicious home made meals at the Evans’ farm, we finally hit the road again. It was a late start this morning because it poured rained, and thundered all night and morning. It was tough to leave the warmth of the house and the good meals. We stopped for lunch in Shawville and enjoyed Judy’s sandwiches that she had made for us. It was a short lunch today and back on the road for us. The weather was somewhat holding up for us, with it drizzling for most of the way (instead of pouring). We called it quits after a 100km, and loaded our bikes onto our brand new bike racks and drove into Ottawa to stay at Jordan’s granny’s house. Later that evening Blayne, a friend of the Evans family took us, the Morphy girls, Carlene, Eric and Mark, out for dinner to a place called The Works. We enjoyed some really good hamburgers and a few drinks. Thanks Blayne!

July 21, 2007 – Luskville to Papineauville

Waking up was easy for Dan and Jordan, but Adam was a little behind. We said our goodbyes and thanks to Jordan’s granny and finally got biking at around 10am. It was hot out today and a little bit of a tailwind made it an easy ride for us. We rode a 100km today, then packed up and headed to Jordan’s cousins’ (Scott and Juliann) cottage out on Lac Orignal. Here, we also got to visit with Jordan’s other cousin Chris and Edna as they were also spending the night at the cottage. Dan and Jordan enjoyed a nice swim in the lake while Adam had to sit on the dock and wish that he could have been swimming. Later that evening Scott and Juliann cooked steak and shrimp for dinner. It was a late night visit for us getting to bed at around 11pm but a good visit it was.

July 22, 2007 – Papineauville to Montreal

Waking up to Juliann making us bacon, hash browns, and waffles for an early breakfast was wonderful and delicious. But being so far from our end point from the day before still got us off to a late start. Arriving in Montreal at 5pm didn’t give us much time to spend with Dan’s cousins. Dan’s cousin Julien (whom we had never met) treated us to a nice dinner at an Italian place which was sooo good. It was a really nice visit with Julien, Claudette, Silvia, and Matt. Learning about some of Dan’s background and heritage was an interesting topic. We then spent the night at Dan’s other cousin (Kevin), and later that night Dan’s cousin (Cory) came over for a visit. All this visiting resulted in another late night.

July 23, 2007 - Montreal to just past St-Hyacinthe

Having eggs and toast in the morning prepared by Dan’s cousin (Kevin) was a good start to our journey through the big city of Montreal. With the help of Kevin’s planning with us the night before we were able to take a bike path right through the city keeping us away from the traffic of the road. With it taking 3.5 hours to make it through the city of Montreal and only doing 45km was making it a long day for Dan and Jordan. We only made it another 50km down the road with the sun beating down on us. We learned that we are not allowed to ride on the TransCanada and that they are pretty strict about it in Quebec, so, we decided to call it quits for the day and come up with a new game plan.

July 24, 2007 - St-Hyacinthe to Saint-Agapit

After our first night camping since Jordan’s farm, we got off to an early start. Dan and Jordan decided to stick with Hwy 20 and see how far they could make it before getting kicked off. They made if approx. 30km when they got into a little bit of trouble with the police. But don’t worry, no arrests were made and they didn’t even seize our bikes. The worst part is that the shoulder on the highway was sweet. Like seriously, pretty much the nicest highway we’ve been on yet (that’s why we decided to push our luck). The best part is that we made it as far as they had hoped. If they had avoided the 20, they would have added an extra 60km onto their trip. It was a long morning and yet again very hot out. We stopped for lunch in Victoriaville (where Adam had detoured to) and got onto a bike path that leads to Riviere-du-loup. We ended our day in Saint-Agapit and completed 155km today. We found a campsite only with a little trouble getting directions in French. It was Smokies, rice, and mushroom soup for dinner. Adam prepared boiled eggs for lunches and potatoes for breakfast.

July 25, 2007 - Saint-Agapit to Ste-Louise

Dan made some greasy bacon, potatoes, and eggs for breakfast, turning Jordan off the bacon and eggs to her original breakfast consisting of granola, nuts, and apple juice. On the road early today got us to Levis for a snack at 8am. We continued to Montmagny for lunch. It was a long day for us, biking 160km. Dan and Jordan are sure enjoying the bike route with it having no vehicle traffic, and many other cyclists. After such a hot and sunny day we relaxed with few beers to end our quiet and beautiful night.

July 26, 2007 - Ste-Louise to Cabano

We had such a good sleep and plenty of rest. We hit the trail at 6am and headed for Riviere-du-loup for lunch. We took an hour break from biking so that Dan and Jordan could pick up some food for lunches and dinners. We found out there is still a bike trail that takes us right to Edmunston, NB. After leaving Riviere-du-loup, it was a long 4 hours to Cabano where we met up with Adam and finished the day off. Dan and Jordan looking so tired, they didn’t have much left in them. We got a campsite right on lake (Temiscouta). Jordan and Dan enjoyed a swim to cool them off. For dinner we went to the pub down on the lake and enjoyed some Nachos and Pizza for dinner. With it being such a hot day once again and a time change coming up, it was an early bed time for us.

July 27, 2007 - Cabano, to Grand Falls, NB

An early and quick start this morning got us riding at about 5:45am. We stopped in Edmundston for lunch. Adam was busy with phone calls and organizing an interview with the local newspaper in Grand Falls, NB. We arrived in Grand Falls at 2pm and then had an interview. Heidi Cyr the interviewer was very nice and gave her opinion on some local places to eat and a very nice camp site right beside the gorge in Grand Falls. We went out for dinner at a local restaurant that over looked the Dam and Falls. Dan and Adam had some pasta and Jordan had Steak for the evening. Back to the camp site we go to relax till bedtime then back at it tomorrow.

July 15-19

Day 47 – July 15, 2007

North Bay to Pembroke

We were on the road by around 8am, but not long after Jordie ran into some mechanical difficulties so we were stopped on the side of the road for a half hour or so. The terrain was fairly hilly with a gradual down slope. We met up with the Ottawa River in Mattawa and followed it for most of the day. Dan could not believe the width of the river which spands a mile or so. The weather couldn’t have been any better with the wind at our backs and some clouds keeping us cool. After doing a 160km to Deep River, where it was suggested that we keep going. Dan was pumped to break their previous record of 167km, and Jordie was exited to surprise her parents by arriving a day early at their home in Waltham. We arrived in Pembroke at 7:30pm after peddling 205km, and loaded up Adam’s truck and headed for the farm. Jordie’s parents arrived from a dinner party shortly after and we sure did surprise Judi (Jordan’s mom). After visiting for a couple of hours we hit the hay, what a day!

Day 48 – July 16, 2007

Petawawa to Waltham

We slept in this morning, cooked a big breakfast, then we headed into town. We went to Gearheads, the bike shop in Petawawa where we had some bike maintenance done. Damien (the owner) had lined up a small group of riders to ride with us to Pembroke. So we began the ride right from the bike shop accompanied by 4 other riders. It was great. We did lots of picture posing and a short interview, then we headed for Waltham. That’s where we were greeted by many friends from town. The friends of Jordan really showed their support today. Many of the local kids joined them for their ride through town and even the fire truck escorted us. We did more posing for pictures and another interview. We peddled to Jordan’s farm and had a small celebration with friends and family.

Day 49 - July 17, 2007

DAY off

Day 50 - July 18, 2007

Judy insisted that we get more rest, so we took the day off again. Then John Fogerty!!!!!! It was a great concert and we had great seats! Adam owes Blayne a big thanks for his ticket, what an awesome contribution. The concert went pretty late, and then with the traffic afterwards, we didn't make it home until after 1am.

Day 51 - July 19, 2007

Yet another day off. We decided to take one final day of rest at the farm before hitting the road and the final stretch of our trip. There is just under 1500km to go and we still hope to finish by the end of the month.

July 9-14

Day 41 – July 9, 2007

Marathon to White River

We got to a somewhat late start today. We only rode 100km to White River. We had laundry to do. We set up camp at the Info booth in town. That’s where they told us to because there are no campsites around. White River’s claim to fame is Winnie the Pooh. Someone purchased a black bear cub there and named it Winnie. It ended up at a zoo where the famous author visited with his son Christopher very often.

Day 42 - July 10, 2007

White River to Wawa

It was super foggy out when we woke up and pretty chilly out too. We rode out and had a good morning. We liked the terrain a lot more. Adam fixed us up with a good lunch as usual. We rode about 120km and called it a day. We camped at a hunt and fish camp. It started raining and storming so we went to bed around 7:30pm.

Day 43 - July 11, 2007

Wawa to Chapleau

Rain, rain and more rain!!! It rained all night and didn’t stop in the morning. We rode 50km in it and then stopped for lunch. It stopped shortly after, but it was still pretty wet all day. It hasn’t been this cold out in a while. But now, we’re all warm and cooking spaghetti for supper.

Day 44 - July 12, 2007

Chapleau to Hwy 144

An early morning for us today, so that Jordan had time to prepare some egg sandwiches for lunch. We finally got biking at around 7:30 am and rode ‘til 11 am, where we enjoyed the homemade sandwiches. The weather was much better to ride in today with it being a little chilly in the morning then warming up after lunch. We rode a total of 116km today, 80km of it being a gravel road. This gave us little bit of a tougher ride with the softness of the road. We stayed at the Watershed Restaurant in a bunk house right where Hwy 144 and the 667 junction. We watched some T.V. and had some good old fashion chilly and buns for dinner. It’s going to be an early night to bed around 8am to give us an early start for tomorrow.

Day 45 – July 13, 2007

Hwy 144 to Sudbury

Wake up call was at 5am, but there was not much enthusiasm to get started after it poured rain all night. At least it wasn’t raining when we were getting ready allowing us to start our journey at 6am to Sudbury. With a few stops along the way for two small lunches and completing 160km today made it a very long day. Once again the terrain was challenging for Jordan, so Adam (the coach/trainer) gave her some tips and made a minor seat adjustment which made a difference for her be the end of the day. We then loaded up the bikes into Adam’s truck and drove out to Jordan’s friends’ (Ashton and Rod) place on Little Panache Lake just outside of Sudbury. Ashton and Rod prepared a wonderful steak dinner for us and a delicious pie for dessert. Later that night a friend of Ashton and Rod’s, T-Bone, came over on his pontoon boat and took us out for a cruise on the lake allowing Adam and Dan to do some fishing. Dan caught a few, but no keepers. Adam got skunked. It was sure a great change being out at their place and getting some time to relax and a dry place to sleep.

Day 46 – July 14, 2007

Sudbury to North Bay

Can you say bacon and eggs for breakfast because we sure can? Dan woke up early and prepared breakfast while everyone else had a slow morning start. After breakfast and saying our thanks and goodbyes we got on the road. We had to make a stop at Cosco in Sudbury to pick up a few things while hoping the rain would stop. All the rain sucked out the desire to do much of anything today, but Jordan is getting excited on arriving at her farm and seeing her parents on Monday, so a day off is out of the question. It was approx 11am and poring rain as we arrived to our starting point. Having the rain come down so hard and a nasty head wind slowed Jordan and Dan down, making it a long day for them. This has been pretty much the worst day of riding for them, with the traffic not being very good, not much of a shoulder, the poring rain, head wind and a late start. We stopped in Sturgeon Falls at Tim Horton’s and had soup and chilly for an early dinner. Jordan was hesitant to bike the last 40km as she was feeling very cold and wet at this point. But an elderly couple that they met inside cheered her up and gave her motivation to keep going. We must keep on track to make it to the farm for Monday. After riding 120km we arrived in North Bay very wet and cold. We went to a car wash to hose off the bikes and also to hose off ourselves.

Sunday, July 8, 2007

July 6-8

July 6 - Day 38 - Thunder Bay to near Rossport

We pedalled a tough 140km today. There were quite a few hills. The sun was shining and we were hot. The day took a little bit of energy out of us. Adam fixed us up with ham sandwiches for lunch and we refilled our water which we were going through like crazy. We found the Rossport provincial campsite for the night and had smokies for supper. We went to bed around 7pm.

July 7 - Day 39 - Day off

So, we've already messed up our itinerary. We were still totally wiped out in the morning, so we decided to take the day off. We were able to check into a motel room early that morning and we just totally vegged all day watching tv. We were kind of lucky because it stormed all afternoon and all night.

July 8 - Day 40 - Rossport to Marathon

It was another tough day - 120km. The terrain in northern Ontario is prooving to be quite a challenging ride. Jordie is just guzzling back the water - she even had to drink some of Dan's today. Adam fixed us up again with a good lunch and then met us near Marathon later in the afternoon. We are staying at a campsite in town - Penn Lake Park campground. It will be another early night.

Tentative Itinerary

Due to high demand, we are posting a tentative itinerary for the remainder of our trip. The key word is "tentative". One of the best parts of this trip is that when something comes up that prevents us from riding, we didn't have a schedule telling us we had to keep going. However, we have been pushing to get to Jordie's farm for July 18th due to a John Fogerty concert oh and of course to see the family. Then since we're on such a wicked pace, we might as well keep it up for the last stretch. We hope to be in Halifax by the end of the month. So, here it is:

July11 - Sudbury

July 14 - Petawawa/Pembroke

July 17 - Hull

July 18 - Day off in Ottawa and JOHN FOGERTY

July 20 - Montreal

July 26 - Fredericton

July 30 - Halifax

The in-betweens are pretty rough estimates of where we will be, but if you want'em let us know.

July 3-5

Day 35 - July 3 - Dryden to a little bit past Ignace

Day 36 - July 4 - Ignace to Raith

Day 37 - July 5 - Raith to Thunder Bay
The time change was unwelcoming to us this morning. We slept an hour extra (6:30) because it was still dark out. Jordie snuck away to wash up while Dan was left in charge of breaking camp while getting attacked fiercely by the bugs. We ate our granola and apple juice in the truck on the way to where we left off. There wasn't a cloud in the sky when we started but that sure changed by the end of the day. "Adam... come rescue us, there's lightning", so we packed up and headed for the campsite. We headed into town for a grocery shop and Adam picked up some extra camping gear. We ate some pizza for dinner, and came back to camp for the night.

Monday, July 2, 2007

July 2nd

Day 34 - July 2nd - Kenora to Dryden

After a well deserved day off, we woke up early and were eager to hit the road. The terrain almost seemed familiar with rolling rocky hills and water around literally every corner. We averaged 20km/hr today which was what we were shooting for. Adam met us for lunch at 60km, ummm... good old sandwitches for lunch, salty snacks for dessert and good old Gatorade to replenesh our electrolights. We arrived in Dryden around 3. Adam found us a campground on the east side of town and he had everything set up by the time we arrived. You would hardly know he has a broken foot! Dan cooked tacos for dinner and we relaxed before heading to bed.

Sunday, July 1, 2007

Days 31-33

Day 31 - June 29th - Winnipeg to Pine Tree Campgrounds

We were up bright and early for breakfast. Sue cooked us omelettes and toast. It was delicious. They stalked us up with enough bottled water to make it through Ontario. We said our thank yous and goodbyes and went on our way. The morning ride was nice, but the long weekend traffic picked up in the afternoon. The shoulder wasn't great so it was a little stressful at times. We called it a day at 98km. The first campsite we went to was full, so we found the Pine Tree Campgrounds which should have been called Mosquito breeding Grounds. We hid out from the bugs in our awesome gazebo (such a good investment) for the whole afternoon. We had chili for supper and cherry pie for dessert.

Day 32 - June 30th - to Kenora

We started at 7:30am. We made it to Kenora by 2:30pm. It was a tough day and we were all pretty tired. We set up camp at the park in town. We weren't into the Canada Day celebrations that were going on all night. We went to bed at 8pm and tried to sleep through them. But that didn't really work all that well. The only campsite available was one on a hill. So sleeping in a tent on an incline isn't that easy or very fun. Dan and Jordan did not sleep very well but Adam had a great sleep in the cab of his truck.

Day 33 - June, no wait, July 1st - Day off

After our poor sleep last night, we are taking the day off. We are going to find another place to stay for the night because apparently the festivities are continuing here tonight.

Friday, June 29, 2007

Days 29 and 30

Day 29 - June 27th - Minnedosa to Portage la Prairie

We woke up around 7 but didn't get on the road 'til about 9:00. We biked over 70 km in a strong crosswind. Our stomachs were growling and we wondered where Adam could be with our lunch. Sure enough he had forgotten about the time change and was dilly dallying in Minnedosa. We weren't upset because we found a nice little bakery that served us soup and sandwiches. We also stocked up on cinnamon buns and cherry pie as well. It was a nice change to hit the #1 today. We finished about 10km outside of Portage la Prairie. We set up camp in Island Park - right in town. That's where we met Derek, a fellow cyclist. He is doing a cross-Canada music tour. He has his own guitar strapped to his trailor. He lost his partner in crime along the way, so we invited him to join us on our ride to Winnipeg.

Day 30 - June 28th - Portage la Prairie to Winnipeg

We got a super late start this morning - like on the road at 10. We did our 10km then Derek met up with us on the other side of Portage and we continued on until lunch. We stopped just outside of Elie(that's where the F4 tornado was) and Adam hooked us all up with lunch. Then Adam went storm chasing in Elie. He saw all the damage done and took some pictures. He even saw a bathtub in the middle of a field. While he was searching for tornados, we carried on to Winnipeg. We bipassed the city and called it a day. Then we had to go to a bike shop because of Dan's misfortune with his back wheel (more broken spokes). So, driving through the city was interesting with Adam that's for sure, but we made it to the shop. While waiting for the repairs, we hit up this restaurant that you need a membership to get in (the guy at the bike shop gave Dan his card). So there, we met up with Dan's cousin Dan, his girlfriend Sue, and his mom Denise. They treated us to a nice meal. After picking up Dan's bike, we went back to Dan's to crash for the night. Their hospitality was unreal especially since it's been 20yrs since the last reunion.

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Days 27-28

Day 27 - June 25th - Yorkton to Langenburg

It was raining when we woke up, but stopped shortly after. Unfortunately we still had a headwind. We made it 30km outside of Yorkton when Dan broke yet another spoke. There isn't much between Yorkton and Winnipeg, so we decided to get Adam to take us back to Yorkton to do some repairs. While waiting for his bike, Dan got his hair cut. Now he's ready to pose for the camera. The wind picked up in the afternoon, which wasn't very motivating. So, we took another little break/rest at the info centre and then did a little evening ride with Adam following. We made it to Langenburg.

Day 28 - June 26th - Langenburg to Minnedosa

We rolled out of Langenburg this morning with the winds at our backs. Some parts of the day were tough with road construction, little shoulder, and when we turned south for a while which gave us a heavy crosswind. Adam fed us a huge feast of sandwiches for lunch to reboost our energy levels. The afternoon we were flying! It was a big day today - over 160km. We are staying at the Minnedosa Beach campground. We just finished smokies and corn on the cob for supper. It's time for laundry and then a little dessert at the local internet cafe. We put our clocks ahead an hour too, so we're going to try to make it an early night.

Sunday, June 24, 2007

Days 21-26

Day 21 June 19th - Loydmister to Battleford.
Adam dropped us off where we finished yesterday which was at the "Welcome to Saskachewan" sign. We left out a story from when we were in Edmonton. Basically, the same night that Adam lost his wallet, he also injured his foot. Today he finally went to the hospital to get it checked out. While he was there, we literally flew on our bikes with a super strong tail wind. We rode 140km in 6 hours to Battleford. We found the David Laird campground on the east end of the city. Jordie cooked wholewheat maccaroni and tomatoe soup for dinner (Jordie's special). That's when we got a phone call from Adam. He decided to rejoin us since he was unable to work. His foot is indeed broken in two places. Unfortunately his foot was too swollen to put a cast on. He was asked to return on Friday to put one on. So he is with us until Thursday night.

Day 22 June 20th Battleford to Saskatoon
We left the David Laird campground and started making miles with great weather and the wind at our backs. We made 75km to Radison for lunch where my cousins (Lawny, Daryl and kids) met us. Daryl rode with us the remaining 65km to Saskatoon. After making it through the city we threw the bikes in the back of Adam's truck and showered up at a nearby pool. Auntie Helen reserved a table at the Blue Diamond reastaurant. We were amazed at the Burgess turnout. There must of have been at least twenty relatives that showed up for dinner. It's so nice to receive such positive encouragement. After many goodbyes and a few family pics, (Cory send me the pics in the parking lot) we made our way to Jordan's cousin Penny's place for the night. We stayed up late visiting since they had a lot to catch up on.

Day 23 June 21st Day of Rest
We grabbed a bacon & egger at Subway and made our way to where we left off at the eastside of the town. the late start didn't help with the wind situation but we faced the cruelest head wind of the trip thus far. After a couple of hours of battling, and pedaling at what seemed as a crawling pace, we decided to wait out the wind and found a 4-H clubhouse parking lot where we blew up our matresses and napped the afternoon away. We tried again around 4 for an hour but the riding became very discouraging, so we set up camp in Clavet. Adam had to leave us to have a cast put on his foot in Loydminster. Rice with a can of tomatoe soup was on the menu for tonight.

Day 24 June 22nd - Saskatoon to Lanigan. With lots of rest from the day before, we broke camp at 4:30am to try and beat the winds. After a flat tire and some consistent head winds, we ate sandwiches in Plunkett. We were feeling pretty tired but a phone call and encourgement from Rick Hansen perked us up for the afternoon ride. We went searching for somewhere to refill our camel packs and came across some friendly Saskachewan folk who invited us in for some ice cold water and a break from the heat. We also enjoyed some watermelon that the neighbor provided. We continued on to Lanigan and arrived around 3. There was a pizza joint which claimed to have the largest single slices of pizza going and it was just what our stomachs were craving. We phoned Adam and received the exciting news that he will be joining us for the remainder of the trip - meaning all the way to Halifax! We found a campsite in town beside the local golf course. Jordie went straight for the shower and Dan set up the tent. We pedalled into town to do some laundry. We were in bed by 8 and Adam found us shortly after midnight.

Day 25 June 23rd - Lanigan to Elstow
We got a fairly early start again to try to beat the winds. Unfortunately, they were against us again. Also, the skies were looking pretty dark. Jordie uncovered her major fear of thunderstorms (she is definitely her mother's daughter). We rode parallel to a major storm all morning, but we stayed dry. At lunch, Adam told us about the tornado warnings. We decided to keep riding until it got ugly, which was in Elstow. Adam was right there to pick us up. There were no campsites around so we checked in to the Willie's Tavern hotel in Foam Lake. Of course there was a bar downstairs that we paid a little visit to. Timmy, the bartender gave us some cool Kokanee hats as souvenirs. Also, the owner of the bar bought us a round of drinks. It was a neat little bar.

Day 26 June 24th- Elstow to Yorkton
We ate granola with apple juice for breakfast while recapping the night before. After checking out of the Tavern Hotel we shuttled back to Elstow where the storm stopped us from reaching Foam Lake. The weather finally smartened up and we were once again blessed with the winds from the west. We sailed 80km in 2.5hours before lunch. The remaining 50km's proved to be much more difficult as the Prairie storm engulfed us. We arrived in Yorkton at 1pm, set up camp and made our way into town for supplies and food to keep us going for the next few days. Campfire burgers were on the menu for dinner.

June 18

Day 20 - June 18 Dan woke up super early (4am) and tried to rally everyone together for an unexpected early start... There was hardly any positive feedback so Dan wrote the last blog at 4:30am which was proof read by Jordan at 7am. We ate our complementary breakfast and made our way back 40km west of Vermillion to start the day. Adam (our support driver) dropped us off and went back to the room to check out. He was nice enough to grab some lunch stuff from the grocery store and meet for lunch after we had done 70km's. The second part of our day turned a little soggy as the clouds rolled in and we hit rain for the last 30km. We rode to the welcome to Saskatchewan sign and Adam picked us up and we went to stay with his brother (Kris) and family (Wife Hanna and two wonderful children, Grace and Beth) We cooked a pork chop feast for them and bought a cheese cake for dessert. After dinner we watched Oceans 13 at the local theatre and headed back to Adam's brother's place for a night cap and some well needed rest. It's off to North Battleford tomorrow and then Saskatoon on Wednesday.

June 16 and 17

Day 18 - June 16 After a solid breakfast of bacon and eggs, we said goodbye to Dan's buddy Dean and packed up our gear. Dan was unable to get help with spoke repair the previous afternoon so we headed out in search of a wheel truer to straighten Dan's wheel. It was finally noon before we were back on the road and out of Edmonton. Because we didn't bike the morning, the afternoon ride didn't seem like that great of an idea. So we decided to take the whole day off. An unintensional day off was inevitable. Adam drove us to a campground outside Elk Island and we set up camp for the night.

Day19 - June 17 Waking up to rain wasn't the most motivating (thing) but we were up, had breakfast and were on the road by 8. Adam dropped us off where we left off and headed back into town to pick up his wallet that the RCMP found on Friday night, as well as Dan's cell phone charger that he left at his brother's place. We rendez-voued for lunch further down the highway. Nothing like homemade sandwiches and smoked salmon which we purchased from a (fruit stand) the previous day. It rained for most of the morning, and the afternoon turned out to be very windy and difficult to ride in. None the less we rode 120km, packed up the bikes and drove into Vermillion for the night. After a soggy day, we decided that a hotel room was the way to go and the weather didn't look very promising. Dan's cousin Drew and his better half (Kelly), stopped by for dinner with us. After dinner, the hottub proved to be welcoming to our soar and tired legs.

We'd like to thank everyone for their tremendous support. It is so awesome reading all the comments. It is sometimes difficult to find a computer with the internet, but knowing that you guys are reading this, we put that extra effort in to find a computer. So, thanks everybody and keep the comments rollin'.

Days 14 - 17

Day 14 - June 12th We left Jasper around noon for Hinton. The breakfast sandwiches at the Coco Cafe were an excellent way to start the day. It was time to bust out the self-sufficient trailer. 80Ibs really slowed Dan down... perfect for Jordie's pace. The terrain was really enjoyable with the mountain goats, big horned sheep and the Rocky mountains in the background. we were starting to feel a little run down from the Jasper stay, so we rallied 70km to Hinton for some camping, maccaronni and tomato soup, and an early night (7:30).

Day 15 - June 13th We left the KOA camground at a descent hour. Probably because we went to bed at 7 the night before. We reached the Obed Summit at around 10:30. It's the highest point on the Yellowhead Highway. We hit Edson around 2 and had lunch at Subway. Jordie insisted that we stop at a grocery store to buy lunch items for the next two days. She bought canned salmon and snopeas and wraps. I checked out the the tourist information centre and the lady suggested that we head another 45km to Nojack campground. It turned out to be 60km and we finally arrived at 6. Jordie cooked her famous mushroom soup and we made it to bed around 8. It was our furthest day ever 160km (unintentionally).

Day 16 - June 14th Nojack to Stonyplain was supposed to be flat according to Glenn... But it wasn't... The trailer pulling wasn't easy. It was rolling hills and rolling hills... Sure enough the prevailling winds were not in our favour. The winds picked up in the afternoon and slowed us down exponentially. We were happy to find a the Lion's Club campsite. They tried to tell us that it was too muddy to camp but we told them that we didnt' care. Lucky for us, it stayed dry the whole night. But before bed, Dan's cousin Drew took us out for a few beer. We had some drinks and lots of laughs and called it a night around 11:30pm.

Day 17 - June 15th We left Stony Plain at 9 this morning. The sun was shining which made it easier to roll out of bed, especially after cousin Drew took us out for drink or two... Riding through Edmonton proved to be quite difficult today. After jumping a couple of curbs, Dan managed to snap a couple of spokes and blow a tire... and then another... and then Dan started a hissy fit. After fixing the second flat, we made it through the city. Adam (our mutual friend) picked us up 40km east of Edmonton at Elk Island Provincial Park. We loaded up Adam's truck and headed back to town to Gerard's (Dan's brother's) place near U of A. So we are sitting here having some brew pops with Dan's other buddy Dean Biller who came up from Red Deer to cheer us on. The plan tomorrow is to go from Elk Island to Vermilion. We should be in Lloydminster Sunday and hopefully that will be our next update. Adam will be our support vehicle/driver until Sunday.

Days 8-13

Day 8 (June 6 - Dan's b-day) The sun didn't shine at all on Dan's birthday. We woke up to pouring rain in 100 mile and it didn't stop ALL day. We stopped in a small cafe at Interlakes. By then we were quite ready for a break from the rain. After some hot soup and a coffee we made our way to Little Fort. But to get into Little Fort there is this huge downhill 10km long where we literally froze. We rolled into Little Fort and went to the first motel we saw. We grabbed a much needed hot shower and went across the street to the local pub to watch the Sens game (sorry for your loss John...) and celebrate Dan's b-day. Our roommate Brad Boudens came up from Kamloops to say hi and watch the game with us. Diane (Dan's mom) met us at the bar after the game and we went back to the room for the night.

Day 9 (June 7) Another rainy day, except Diane brought some riding pants and neoprene gloves for Jordie to make the ride much more comfortable. The Yellowhead highway was welcoming to us with wide shoulders and smoother pavement. We made it to Avola. Another 100km in the rain. We were finished quite early(2:30) and spent the afternoon watching movies and napping in the hotel. The owner of the hotel made us hamburgers and chili for dinner. We were sleeping by 8.

Day 10 (June 8 - Jordan's b-day) We were happy to wake up with no rain in sight. We stopped for a snack in Blue river and pedaled for 90km when we met Diane and blew up our foamies and had a nap on the side of the road for over an hour. I think it was Dan's pace that burned us out... None the less we hammered an afternoon ride of about 30km and made it to 20km outside of Valemount. We put the bike in the back of the truck and headed into town. Diane cooked us an excellent pork meal with corn on the cob. After dinner we went across the street to the Loose Moose Pub to celebrate Jordie's B-day. We ran into Heather Lynch (a friend of Jordie's from Pembroke) and we watch her baseball game and had a few frosties.

Day 11 (June 9) Diane got us going with some fried eggs on toast for breakfast which was a nice change from Granola and oatmeal and drove us back to where we left off the day before. We stopped for lunch at Rearguard Falls. We had a near miss there and a little mishap. The near miss was that a mudslide missed us by under 5 minutes. But then Diane accidentally locked the keys in the truck and had to wait for a tow truck while we pushed on for the day. 3 hrs later we were beginning to get a little worried and hungry. Just as we reached the 100km she greeted us with tasty sandwiches. We decided to call it a day 50km outside of Jasper and head into town. We checked into the Athabaska hotel, showered up and Diane treated us to a pasta dinner downtown. We stayed up for a couple of brew pops at the Whistler Inn but didn't last long.

Day 12 (June 10) We were shuttled out to where we stopped the previous day and said goodbye to Diane. We made it into Jasper in the early afternoon and did a few tourist things before meeting with Glenn Schleiman. He used to work on the farm in Waltham back in the day as well as a little babysitting for the Evans'. He treated us to some fine dining and a night on the town. Stories of the old days were the highlight of the day.

Day 13 (June 11) Our first real day off. We slept in, checked out, brought our gear to Glenn's where he putting us up for the night. We were couch potatoes after brunch but finally got some motivation to take care of a few things. We are excited for a home cooked meal at Glenn's tonight. Then it's off to Hinton tomorrow.

Day 6 and 7

Day 6 (yesterday) we pedalled 66km which brought us to William's Lake before noon. We took the rest of the day off to run some errands like some bike maintainance, grocery shopping and a little visiting with friends. Someone stopped Jordie at the grocery store and asked her what her tan lines on her face were from. We watched the Sens lose then packed up and went to bed.

Day 7 - We are riding to 100Mile House today and meeting Guy (Dan's Dad) after work. Guy has been awesome since the beginning of this trip as our support driver. He has spoiled us with excellent meals, his positive attitude and sense of humour. Diane (Dan's Mom) will be taking over Tuesday night from Little Fort to Jasper. We probably won't be updating until Jasper. Our ETA there is Sunday.

Day 5

Another 100 km today. Our tanlines definitely makes us look like cyclists now. The sun and wind pounded us today. We took a little shortcut on a gravel road that followed the Chilcotin River for 20km instead of climbing hill called Revenge. We ate lunch by the river and tackled the Lee's Corner hill after that. The winds picked up - got our first taste of some nasty headwinds for the last 30km. We're only doing 60km tomorrow - that will bring us back to William's lake where we will refuel and recharge.

Summary of Days 1-4

We made our way out to Bella Coola on Wednesday. We dipped our feet/bikes into the Pacific Ocean and started pedalling that afternoon. About 60km later we found ourselves at Tweedsmuir Lodge where the lady in charge (Carol) there hooked us up with a nice little cabin to stay in. The next day we had to tackle "the hill". 20km of 10-14% grades which took a good 5 hours. We called it a night and camped out at Nimpo Lake. Day 3 starting at the top of "the hill"/Heckman's Pass, we did 120km and camped out at One Eye Lake. This was a good day for wildlife. We saw a black bear, a few deer, a cow moose and its calf, and a marmot. Jordie almost hit a deer (yes, on her bike). It's a good thing her breaks were working. Day 4 we pedalled 100km and called it a day. We got a beating from the hot weather and bright sun. It tought us a thing or two about sunscreen. Tomorrow we hope to start bright and early to beat the heat.

Well, goodnight everybody...

Night before departure

Well... Obstacles arise on such epic journeys. We found out this morning that the road to Prince Rupert is blocked by a huge mudslide this side of Terrace; 66m wide and 10m thick. It is unknown when the road will be reopened. One commitment of this trip is riding coast to coast. We are anxious to start and we don't want a road closure to push back our starting date indefinitely; therefore we have decided to relocate our starting point to Bella Colla. This is a small community 600km west of Williams Lake. Bright and early tomorrow morning we will drive out there instead of to Prince Rupert. Sorry to all our friends in Smithers and Burns Lake that we will miss going this new route.

T-3 days

Spending our last night in Kamloops at Colin's house. Sort of a departure celebration. Baby back ribs and asparagus. Early night tonight... Lots to do tomorrow.
